A project to redevelop the 12 year old website, incorporating an event registration system and membership database.

The project began with an audit of the current website, and recommendations as to possible directions to take to improve the website and how it could be used. The original website had been designed and built in the era before social media and smartphones,  and although it contained a members area, the functionality was limited.

The project involved designing and building a new website to market the club’s activities, and develop a membership database and event management system. Although most of the event detail and event registration is behind a login (with new members being reviewed and approved), there were many opportunities to harness the marketing opportunity of displaying this dynamic information on the front-end public website, which was achieved through custom plug-ins and custom shortcodes.

The membership database allows new members to join, individual to edit their own membership details, and a range of permission levels to allow the information to be appropriately accessed and administered.

The event registration system allows recognised Walk Leaders to submit their walk events for approval, and to edit and manage their walk participants. Individual members, who meet the walk requirements, are able to join the walk event online.

A MailChimp branded email was also developed, which uses limited responsive design to display at 100% text size on smartphones. By utilizing the MailChimp API, whenever a member subscribes or unsubscribes via their membership account on the website, or they update their MailChimp profile, the information is synchronised between the membership database and MailChimp.

Key data assets were able to be incorporated into the website public front end and members area, including a searchable collection of library books and resources, and a database of past walk event planning tools.
